Stellar Photo Recovery 10 restores deleted, lost or formatted photos, videos and audio files from Windows or Mac storage. It reads major file systems including FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, APFS and HFS+, and recovers from internal disks, SSDs, USB drives, SD cards and camera media. A deep-scan mode rebuilds files by signature when the file table is damaged, which is what matters after a card shows a "not formatted" error. The free trial recovers up to 10 files of 100 MB each, so you can confirm results before buying.
It is aimed at photographers and videographers who shoot RAW, because it recovers proprietary RAW formats from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax and other makers, not only JPEG. It also handles footage from drones, action cameras and CCTV systems, so a videographer who reformatted a card mid-shoot can pull back the original clips. Everyday users benefit too, since recovery runs in three steps — select, scan, recover — with no command-line work. The practical advantage over a generic undelete tool is RAW and video signature support that preserves the original capture quality.
It recovers common image formats such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF and PSD, plus camera RAW files including CR2, NEF, ARW and DNG, and video and audio formats like MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3 and WAV. Supported media covers HDDs, SSDs, USB sticks and memory cards from microSD and SDHC/SDXC to CompactFlash and XQD. It can scan 4K-sector (4096-byte) drives formatted to FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+ or APFS. If a format is missing from the list, you can add a new file header so the scanner detects it.
The split is about repair, not recovery: all three editions recover deleted and lost media, but only the higher tiers fix corrupt files. Standard recovers photos, videos and audio but does not repair damaged ones. Professional adds repair of corrupt or distorted photos, and Premium additionally repairs corrupt videos such as broken MP4 and MOV clips. Choose Standard if your files are simply deleted; choose Professional or Premium if the recovered files open with errors or play back broken.

The base recovery edition does not repair corrupt or distorted files; for that you need the Professional or Premium edition. Recovered files must be saved to a different drive than the one being scanned, because writing back to the source can overwrite the very data you are trying to restore. Data that has already been overwritten by new files cannot be brought back by any software, which is why you should stop using a card the moment you notice a loss. For multi-machine or technician work, Stellar sells a separate Technician edition rather than extending the consumer license.
For a failing drive with bad sectors, it can first create a sector-by-sector image and then scan that image, which avoids stressing the dying disk further during recovery. Its SMART readout reports disk health and temperature, giving early warning before a drive fails completely. You can save a scan's results to a file and resume the recovery later instead of repeating a long scan from scratch. These features suit real jobs where a single deep scan can run for hours on a large or damaged drive.
Yes, as long as the data has not been overwritten. The deleted entry is removed from the file table, but the actual photo data stays on the device until new files take its place, so stop saving to that storage and scan it as soon as possible.
Software recovery works only if your system and the program can still detect the card. A card that is bent, burnt or has damaged connectors and is not recognised needs Stellar's lab service, which extracts data with specialised hardware.
Yes, provided you know the card's password. Once access is granted, the software can scan and restore media from a write-protected card.
Yes, separate Windows and macOS builds are offered. The macOS version supports APFS, HFS+ and exFAT volumes, so Mac users can recover from internal disks and external camera media.
