What does Visio Professional 2024 do?

Visio Professional 2024 is a desktop application for flowcharts, org charts, network maps, floor plans and engineering schematics. Its defining feature is data linking: any shape can be bound to a row in Excel, an Access table, a SQL Server database or a SharePoint list, so the diagram refreshes when the source changes. That turns a static drawing into a live view of your data, such as an org chart that redraws itself after the HR spreadsheet is edited. Diagrams are created and saved locally in the .vsdx format on Windows.

How is Visio Professional 2024 different from Visio Standard 2024?

Both are perpetual desktop editions with the same Office 2024 Fluent interface, but Professional adds the tools technical users depend on. Only Professional includes data linking, BPMN 2.0 and UML 2.5 stencils, diagram validation against business rules, AutoCAD (.dwg/.dxf) import and export, and real-time co-authoring; Standard is limited to one editor at a time and static diagrams. There is no upgrade path from Standard to Professional, so choosing Standard and later needing data linking or CAD means buying a separate Professional licence. If there is any chance you need those features, Professional is the cheaper decision overall.

Does Visio Professional 2024 include the web and cloud editing features?

No. The perpetual Visio Professional 2024 licence does not include Visio for the web, browser-based editing, or the cloud-only capabilities tied to the Microsoft 365 subscription plans (Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2). You can still save .vsdx files to OneDrive or SharePoint and co-author them from the desktop app, but the fully browser-based editor is subscription-only. Data linking also runs only in the desktop app; in the web viewer you can view a data-linked diagram but not build one. Buyers who specifically need in-browser editing should look at Visio Plan 2 instead.

Does Visio Professional 2024 need Office or a Microsoft 365 subscription to run?

No. Visio Professional 2024 installs and runs as a standalone Windows application, with no requirement for a separate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Microsoft 365 installation. It works locally and offline, and it coexists with an existing Office 2024 or Microsoft 365 setup while sharing the same Fluent interface. It reads from Excel or Access only when you point a data-linked diagram at those files. This makes it suitable for a workstation that needs professional diagramming without adopting a full subscription.

Confirm you are on Windows: the perpetual Visio 2024 editions are Windows-only, with no Mac desktop version. Decide whether your work actually needs data linking, BPMN/UML, CAD import, or diagram validation; if not, Standard covers basic flowcharts and org charts for a lower price. Check who receives your files, since Visio 2024 saves as .vsdx and very old versions need a Save As to the legacy .vsd format. Frequently asked questions about Visio 2024 Professional

Can Visio Professional 2024 open files from older Visio versions?

Yes, with one limitation. Visio 2024 opens files from Visio 2013 onward and saves in the .vsdx format by default, but it blocks pre-2013 .vsd files unless they are re-saved. To share a diagram with someone still on Visio 2003 to 2010, use Save As to export to the older .vsd format, though some newer elements are dropped in that format.

Is Visio Professional 2024 available for Mac?

No. The perpetual Visio 2024 Standard and Professional editions are Windows desktop applications and do not have a native Mac version. Mac users can only reach Visio through a browser using the subscription-based Visio for the web (Visio Plan 1 or Plan 2), which does not include the full desktop feature set such as offline data linking. 

Which Office versions can Visio 2024 Professional be installed with?

Visio is a separate program and is not contained in any Office suite, so it is bought as an addition to whatever is already on the PC. Microsoft ties that combination to the release year: every Office-family program on one computer has to use the same update channel, and each generation has its own. That is why a Visio key from the wrong year fails to install even though nothing is wrong with the key.

Important – Visio is not part of any Office suite edition, and there is no Visio desktop application for macOS.

Can Visio 2024 Professional be installed next to the Office already on the PC?

That depends on which generation that Office belongs to, and it is the most common reason an add-on purchase fails. Microsoft names two rules: two products with the same version but different installation technologies cannot share a computer, and two products of different versions cannot both use Click-to-Run when they have overlapping applications. Neither rule stops an Office 2021 suite from taking a Visio 2024 key, because both use Click-to-Run, both report version 16.0, and Visio shares no applications with an Office suite in the first place. The rule that does is separate: products installed on the same computer must use the same update channel, and each perpetual generation has its own. Microsoft 365 Apps is the exception in the other direction, listed as a supported partner for Visio LTSC Professional 2024 from version 2408 onwards.

Why does Visio 2024 Professional not install on a PC with Office 2016?

Because of the installer, not the year. Microsoft lists Office 2016 as the only release in this range that can be installed with Windows Installer, while everything from Office 2019 onwards uses Click-to-Run, and all of these releases report the same version number, 16.0. Two products that share a version but use different installation technologies cannot sit on the same computer, so a machine running an installer-based Office 2016 takes no Visio of any generation, not even Visio 2016. Microsoft's own scenario table names Office Professional Plus 2019 next to Visio Professional 2016 as unsupported for exactly this reason. An Office 2016 that was installed with Click-to-Run is not blocked by that rule, but it still sits on a different update channel.

In which order should Office and Visio 2024 be installed?

Put the Office suite on the machine first, then install Visio 2024 Professional into the finished installation. Microsoft's own guidance is to install the older Office-family products before the newer ones, and to remove existing versions of Office before deploying the 2024 generation, with most installer-based products removable during that setup. The detail that decides whether the second installation succeeds is the architecture: Microsoft states that all installed products must match in bit version, and uses Visio as its own example, noting that a 32-bit Visio cannot be installed on a computer running a 64-bit Office. Check the existing suite under File, Account before you run the setup, because a mismatch here is fixed by uninstalling the wrong build rather than by repairing it.

Is Microsoft Visio part of any Office 2024 suite?

No, and that is what makes it an add-on rather than an upgrade. Microsoft lists Visio LTSC Professional 2024 and Visio LTSC Standard 2024 as products in their own right, next to Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 and Office LTSC Standard 2024. The Professional Plus suite contains Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, with Skype for Business as an optional install during setup, and no diagramming application among them. Buying a larger Office edition therefore never produces a copy of Visio.

Which Windows versions is Visio 2024 Professional supported on?

Microsoft names Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021, Windows 10 LTSC 2019, Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022 as the supported operating systems for the 2024 generation, which covers Visio and Project as well as the Office suites. The standard Windows 10 editions were on that list at launch and are no longer named, because Windows 10 was supported only until 14 October 2025. On Arm-based devices, Windows 11 is the minimum. This is the one row that differs from the Visio 2021 and Visio 2019 pages, where the standard Windows 10 editions are still listed.

What is not included with Visio 2024 Professional?

There is no macOS version, so a Mac needs a Windows installation of its own before this program can run on it. Microsoft's answer for Mac users is Visio for the web in Safari or Chrome, but that is a browser application reached through a Microsoft 365 or Visio subscription and is not part of this purchase. Visio belongs to the 2024 perpetual generation, which Microsoft describes as not including the cloud-backed features of Microsoft 365 Apps, so there is no real-time collaboration and no AI-driven automation. Microsoft also states that only the subscription versions of Visio and Project receive regular feature updates, so this release keeps the feature set it launched with. Diagrams stay in .vsdx files on the local disk, which is also what makes the program usable on a machine that has no permanent internet connection.

A key that has already been redeemed could no longer be used for a new activation and is therefore not offered by us.

Trading in these product keys is permissible in the European Union and in Switzerland under current case law, provided that the necessary conditions are met. These conditions are as follows:

• The software must originally have been placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the territory of the EU, another contracting state of the EEA, or Switzerland by way of sale.
• The license for the software must have been granted in return for the payment of a fee intended to enable the rightholder to obtain remuneration corresponding to the economic value of the copy of the software.
• The rightholder must have granted the first acquirer the right to use the software permanently (for an unlimited period).
• Any improvements and updates that the subsequently downloaded computer program has compared to the originally downloaded one must be covered by a maintenance agreement concluded between the rightholder and the first acquirer.
• The original licensee must have made their own copies unusable.

This trade is legally permissible because the underlying license was already placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the EU/EEA or Switzerland in return for appropriate remuneration. As a result, the so-called principle of exhaustion has taken effect, which permits the resale of individual product keys — in particular those originating from volume license agreements. Microsoft or the respective software provider has already received appropriate remuneration for this.
