Stellar Converter for MBOX converts MBOX, MBS, MBX, and RGE mailbox files into Microsoft Outlook PST format. It exists because Outlook cannot open MBOX files directly, so mail archived in clients like Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Gmail (via Google Takeout) must be converted first. During conversion the tool keeps the original folder hierarchy, message order, attachments, and email properties intact. You can save the result as a new PST and then load it into Outlook using the standard Import/Export wizard.
It reads MBOX-based files from more than 17 email clients, including Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Google Takeout (Gmail), Eudora, Entourage, PocoMail, SeaMonkey, and Netscape. Besides standard .mbox files, it also handles the MBS, MBX, and RGE variants these clients produce. Every edition can save converted data as PST, MSG, and EML. A built-in preview pane lets you inspect folders and individual messages before saving, which helps when an archive holds years of mixed mail.
The difference lies in the saving and export options, not in the conversion engine. The Corporate edition saves only to a new PST plus EML and MSG, while the Technician edition adds save-to-existing-PST and RTF, PDF, and HTML output. Only the Technician edition exports converted mail directly to a live Outlook profile or to a Microsoft 365 (Office 365) account. If you only need MBOX-to-PST migration on a single machine, Corporate covers it; pick Technician when you need direct cloud export or report-style formats like PDF.
| Saving option | Corporate | Technician |
|---|---|---|
| New PST | ✓ | ✓ |
| Existing PST | ✕ | ✓ |
| EML & MSG | ✓ | ✓ |
| PDF, RTF, HTML | ✕ | ✓ |
| Office 365 export | ✕ | ✓ |
| Outlook profile export | ✕ | ✓ |
Direct export to Office 365 and to a live Outlook profile is available only in the Technician edition, not in Corporate. In the Corporate edition you instead save a PST file and import it into Outlook manually with the Import/Export wizard. This matters for IT staff migrating mailboxes into a Microsoft 365 tenant, because the manual PST route adds extra steps for every mailbox. If your workflow ends in Office 365 rather than a local Outlook profile, the Technician edition is the version that removes that manual import step.
Check which output you actually need, because PDF, RTF, HTML, existing-PST, Office 365, and direct Outlook-profile saving are Technician-only features. The free demo scans and previews the entire mailbox but cannot save converted data, so plan to buy a license once the preview confirms the content is correct. Confirm your destination Outlook version is supported, since the tool targets Outlook 2007 through 2021. For very large archives, note that the resulting PST is split automatically at roughly 45 GB to keep Outlook responsive.
No. The demo scans the MBOX file and shows a full preview of the mailbox, but it cannot save or export the converted data. You need a Corporate or Technician license to write the output to PST or any other format.
The converted PST is built for Microsoft Outlook 2021, 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, and 2007. After conversion you import the PST into your installed Outlook using the Import/Export wizard. This covers both older on-premises Outlook setups and current desktop versions.
The tool always processes the whole MBOX file rather than a handful of pre-selected messages. At the saving stage, though, you can choose which converted items to keep, and date-range and sender filters narrow the output further. This means you still control what ends up in the final PST even though the scan covers the entire file.
