PDF Creation – Create PDFs from any application that prints.
Direct Editing – Edit text, images and pages like a word processor.
OmniPage OCR – Turns scanned pages into searchable, editable text.
Security Tools – 256-bit AES encryption and certificate-based digital signatures.

Important – Windows Server and Citrix deployment need Power PDF Advanced.
Power PDF 3.1 is a Windows desktop PDF suite sold as a one-time purchase in two editions, Standard and Advanced, using the same OmniPage recognition engine found in Nuance's OCR products. Kofax took over the Nuance Document Imaging line in 2019, so version 3.1 ships under Kofax branding while retail listings often still carry the Nuance name.
One-Time Purchase – Perpetual licence instead of a recurring subscription.
Familiar Ribbon – Office-style interface shortens training for existing Word users.
Accurate Conversion – Retains columns, tables, headers and footers in Word.
Office Integration – Add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Two Editions – Standard covers editing; Advanced adds compliance tools.
Batch Processing – Applies stamps, watermarks and page edits across documents.
It creates, edits, converts, secures and assembles PDF files on the Windows desktop. PDFs can be generated from any application that prints, directly from a scanner using WIA, TWAIN or ISIS drivers, or from MSG and EML mail files even when no mail client is installed on the machine. Editing happens on the page itself — text, images, headers, footers, page order — and export targets include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect and XPS. Version 3.1 specifically added a reworked OCR Settings dialog for selecting several recognition languages at once, reading-order editing on the Tag panel, and the option to save search results as CSV or PDF.
It suits offices that handle scanned paperwork daily and want to stop retyping it. A typical case is an accounts team that receives supplier invoices as image-only PDFs: Power PDF auto-detects that there is no text layer, offers to convert the file to searchable PDF, and can pull a multipage table straight into a single Excel worksheet with number formats intact. Legal and records teams are the group that specifically needs the Advanced edition, because permanent redaction and Bates stamping with custom formatting profiles are not in Standard. If your documents already arrive as clean, text-based PDFs and you only need to merge and annotate them, Standard covers that work.
Standard covers creation, editing, OCR, conversion and signing; Advanced adds the compliance, automation and deployment layer. The features that exist only in Advanced are permanent redaction, Bates stamping, watched-folder automation, PDF/A compliance checking, DocuSign actions, real-time co-editing over a LAN, AD RMS and FileOpen support, and connectors to document management systems such as SharePoint 2010–2019, iManage Work 9.3–10.2, NetDocuments, Worldox GX3/GX4, OpenText Enterprise Connect and Documentum. Advanced is also the only edition documented for Citrix, Active Directory and Terminal Services environments, and the only one with the Installation Customization Kit and a programming interface. Both editions share the same OmniPage OCR engine and the same conversion accuracy, so the split is about governance and rollout, not output quality.

Not as a self-contained service. Both editions can create and apply self-sign digital signatures, work with Microsoft Crypto API and third-party certificates, and manage a library of signatures — that is certificate-based signing, done locally. The DocuSign integration that covers hosted e-signature workflows sits only in Power PDF Advanced, and the official 3.1 help states plainly that both Send via DocuSign and Sign with DocuSign require a DocuSign account of your own. In practice this means a contracts team buying Advanced still needs a separate DocuSign arrangement before the Security ribbon button does anything useful, while Standard buyers have local certificate signing only.
The 3.1 documentation lists over one hundred recognition languages across the Latin, Greek and Russian alphabets, plus Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese and Korean. There is a real constraint attached: an Asian language cannot be mixed with Latin or Cyrillic languages in the same recognition pass, so you select either one Asian language or one or more Latin/Cyrillic languages. Automatic language detection assigns a single language per page and only picks from the dictionary-supported subset, which is why it is aimed at unattended batches rather than mixed-language pages. For an archive containing Japanese documents with embedded English, plan to split the batch or accept the automatic-detection result.
The official 3.1 system requirements list Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Windows 11 does not appear in that list, because 3.1 predates it — buyers already on Windows 11 should look at the later 4.x or 5.x releases instead. Server operating systems from 2008 R2 SP1 through 2019, including Citrix, Active Directory and Terminal Services scenarios, are documented for Advanced business deployments only. Office integration is documented for Office 2010 SP2, 2013 SP1, 2016 and 2019, so newer Office builds are outside what Kofax tested for this release.
Check three things: which edition you actually need, which Windows build you run, and how long the release will be maintained. Kofax's desktop support policy provides 90 days of technical support from the start of product ownership, and beyond that covers only the current version and one version prior — Power PDF has since moved through versions 4 and 5, so 3.1 falls outside that window. That matters less if you are running a stable Windows 10 machine and need a working editor now, and more if you expect fix packs or a future OS migration. Also confirm before buying whether redaction or DMS connectors are on your requirement list, because moving from Standard to Advanced later is a separate purchase, not a setting.
Yes. Power PDF 3.1 creates and opens PDF versions 1.3 through 2.0, supports Adobe Extended Features, Adobe dynamic XFA forms and Adobe PDF portfolios. It can also remove watermarks that were applied in Acrobat.
Yes, in both editions. Files can be opened and saved through the File menu to Box, Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. The Evernote connector needs Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2, which the installer adds if it is not already present.
Yes. Tables can be extracted from a PDF into Excel or Word, and a table spread across several PDF pages can be converted into a single Excel document. Number formats such as currency and percentage are retained, which saves reformatting a converted statement or price list by hand.
Yes, in both Standard and Advanced. A flat PDF can be converted automatically into a fillable form, with check boxes and radio buttons detected during the process, and form controls can be drawn or edited manually. Filled form data can be exported from one or many forms, and 3.1 added rich text formatting inside text fields.
