CAD Output Formats – Writes DWG, DXF and HPGL drawing files.
Editable Vector Entities – Lines, arcs, layers and colours stay editable.
Text As MTEXT – Searchable PDF text becomes editable CAD text.
Image Export – Also outputs JPEG, PNG and TIFF files.
Core Capacity – Runs on Windows and macOS desktop systems.
Important – No OCR or scanned-drawing vector tracing included.
VisualIntegrity PDF2CAD is a desktop converter that turns vector PDF drawings into editable DWG, DXF or HPGL files for AutoCAD, BricsCAD, MicroStation, TurboCAD and comparable programs. It extracts the geometry, text and layer data already stored inside the PDF instead of tracing the page as a picture.
No Redrawing – Existing drawings return as editable CAD geometry.
Layer Separation – Splits objects onto layers by colour.
Font Mapping – Automatic mapping keeps drawing text visually correct.
Batch Processing – Converts folders of drawings in one run.
Page Merging – Combines a page range into one drawing.
Scale Control – Set page size, scale and line width.
PDF2CAD reads the vector data already stored inside a computer-generated PDF and rewrites it as DWG, DXF or HPGL geometry. Lines, arcs, fills, colours and layer information cross over as real CAD entities, so a floor plan or a network diagram opens in AutoCAD as objects you can snap to and edit, not as a flat underlay. Text that is searchable in the PDF is mapped to MTEXT objects, which keeps room labels and dimension notes editable. Version 14 additionally writes JPEG, PNG and TIFF where only an image is needed, and supports transparency in fills and images.
No. PDF2CAD extracts existing vector data and does not trace raster artwork. Fed a scanned drawing, it produces an empty DWG or DXF container plus one or more referenced TIFF or JPEG files; keeping those images in the same folder as the CAD file gives you a tracing layer, not editable geometry. Visual Integrity states directly that the software is not designed for scanned CAD drawings and that OCR does not close the gap either, because OCR recovers document text while leaving graphics as flat bitmaps. If your archive is mostly paper scans, this is the wrong tool and a redraw service or a dedicated raster-to-vector product is the realistic route.
Because that text was plotted using AutoCAD SHX shape fonts before the PDF was created. SHX characters are stored in PDF as pen strokes rather than characters, so PDF2CAD can only reproduce them as SPLINE geometry — no character definition survives to be recovered. Text drawn with TrueType fonts makes the round trip intact and is written back as MTEXT with fonts and styles preserved. For drawings containing Chinese, Arabic or Cyrillic text, or where the CAD output looks garbled, the "Convert characters to curves" option on the General tab of the Options menu outputs text as outlines so it at least renders correctly.
Any application that reads DWG, DXF or HPGL, which covers AutoCAD, TurboCAD, MicroStation, BricsCAD and most CAM and plotting software. PDF2CAD is a standalone converter: you convert the file first, then open the result in your CAD application. Visual Integrity sells separate add-ins that place the same conversion engine inside the host program — PDFin for AutoCAD, PDF2BricsCAD and PDF2Vectorworks — and none of these are included with PDF2CAD. If you want PDF import from inside your CAD program's own menus rather than as a separate step, plan for the matching plug-in in addition.
All three run on the same Visual Integrity conversion engine and share the version 14 code base; what separates them is the set of formats each one reads and writes. PDF2CAD is the CAD-focused member, producing DWG, DXF and HPGL alongside JPEG, PNG and TIFF. PDF2PICTURE aims at image and SVG output for design and publishing work, while PDF FLY is the broadest of the three and additionally accepts PostScript and EPS as input. Pick PDF2CAD when the destination is a drawing file, and PDF FLY when you also handle EPS or PostScript artwork or need SVG, WMF, EMF and CGM.

No. The desktop application converts on demand and in batch, but unattended hot-folder automation is handled by Visual Integrity's separate PDF Conversion Server, whose executable is what a watch-folder utility such as WatchDirectory is pointed at. In practice PDF2CAD fits a drafter or a small drawing office processing files as they come in, while a document-control team that wants every incoming PDF turned into DXF with nobody present needs the server product instead. If unattended conversion is on your requirements list, settle that point before buying the desktop version.
Test one of your own drawings first, because output quality depends entirely on how the PDF was originally produced. Open the file and zoom to 500 percent: crisp lines indicate a vector PDF that PDF2CAD can take apart, pixelated lines indicate a scan it cannot. Then try the text select tool in Acrobat Reader — if nothing highlights, the text has already been outlined to curves and will not return as MTEXT. Visual Integrity provides a 7-day evaluation for Windows and macOS plus the ConvertPDF.Online test service, which grants 10 free conversion credits after registration.
Yes. An option for converting password-protected PDF files was introduced with version 12, so protected drawings do not have to be unlocked in a separate PDF tool beforehand.
Yes. Visual Integrity maintains localized builds and offers a French edition of pdf2cad alongside the English version.
| Operating Systems | Windows 11 Windows 10 |
| Memory RAM | 4 GB. |
| Hard Disk | 50 MB free disk space. |
| Note | Requires 64-bit Microsoft Windows. RAM and disk requirements are based on earlier PDF2CAD Windows documentation because current v14 documentation does not publish updated hardware minimums. PDF2CAD is designed primarily for computer-generated vector PDF files. Scanned and raster PDF drawings are not converted to editable vector geometry. |
