Paperless Archiving – Turns scanned paper into searchable PDF files.
Table Recovery – Extracts PDF tables directly into Excel sheets.
OCR Proofreading – Correct recognition errors before exporting to Word.
Batch Conversion – Processes several documents in one conversion run.
Scanner Compatibility – Works with TWAIN scanners from most manufacturers.
Familiar Interface – Office ribbon or modern shortcut layout available.
Readiris PDF Standard 23 converts scans, images and Office files into PDF, and converts PDFs back into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, TIFF or PNG. Its OCR engine recognises 138 languages and handles up to three languages on the same page, which matters for archives that mix correspondence languages in one file. Recognition results can be proofread and corrected inside the application before export, so a misread invoice number gets fixed once instead of downstream in your accounting file. Page work such as insert, extract, split, merge, reorder and crop happens in the same window as the conversion.
Both editions share the same OCR engine, PDF editing tools and Office export formats, so the split is not about recognition quality. Business adds the document-security and automation layer: black-zone redaction, certificate-based signing, barcode reading and stamps, PDF/A archive output, and the smart-zone separation and automatic naming used for high-volume mailroom scanning. Standard is the right choice when one person digitises and edits documents; Business is the choice when scanned batches must be split, named and archived without manual sorting.

No. Black-zone redaction, invisible metadata e-signatures and certificate-based signing are all reserved for Readiris PDF 23 Business. Standard can place an image-based signature onto a page, which covers internal approval routing but does not produce a cryptographically verifiable signature a counterparty can validate. This matters most for documents released outside the company, because drawing a black rectangle over a name in any PDF editor leaves the underlying text layer intact and copyable. If your workflow involves HR files, medical referrals or legal disclosure bundles, the missing redaction tool is the deciding factor rather than a nice-to-have.
Standard saves to PDF, searchable PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, TIFF, PNG and BMP. HTML and ePUB export are not part of this edition, and neither is ISO-standard PDF/A output, which is the format most public-sector and legal archiving policies actually name. Table extraction places recognised tables into Excel or Word with the column flow retained, so a scanned price list arrives as a working sheet rather than a picture of one. For cloud handoff, Standard exports to Dropbox, while OneDrive, Box and Google Drive destinations belong to the Business edition.
It fits a single workstation where paper and PDFs arrive daily but nobody is running an automated capture line. A bookkeeper who scans supplier invoices and needs the figures in Excel gets the full 138-language OCR engine and table extraction without paying for the barcode and auto-naming automation in Business. A translator or researcher benefits from the three-languages-per-page recognition, which handles bilingual contracts that single-language OCR tools split into nonsense. The edition stops being the right fit the moment documents have to be redacted, signed with a certificate, or separated automatically from a stack of mixed scans.
Readiris PDF Standard 23 is supported on Windows 10 and Windows 11 only, and Windows Server is not a supported platform. That rules out installing it on a terminal server or RDS host so several staff can share one document-processing environment. IRIS publishes Readiris PDF 23 for macOS as a separate build, so a Windows edition does not cover a Mac workstation. In a mixed Windows and Mac office, decide the platform per seat before ordering rather than after.
It works with TWAIN-compliant scanners, which covers most models from Canon, HP, Fujitsu, Epson, Brother, Kodak, Plustek and IRIS. Scanning starts inside the application, so pages go straight into the OCR and PDF workflow instead of being saved as loose images first. If a device only ships WIA or a vendor-specific driver, check that a TWAIN driver is available before buying.
No. Interactive PDF form filling was introduced in a later Readiris PDF edition and is not part of the 23 generation. You can still add text zones and annotations onto a page, but that writes on top of the document rather than into form fields, so the data is not stored as form values another system can read back.
For conversion-heavy work it covers the same ground: OCR, PDF creation, text and image editing, page assembly, annotation and Office export. It does not replace Acrobat for compliance workflows, because redaction, PDF/A archiving and certificate-based signatures are absent from this edition. Teams that mainly digitise paper and pull data into Word and Excel usually lose nothing by switching; teams that publish regulated or redacted documents will not.
