Encrypted VPN Tunnel – Routes traffic through Norton servers under a no-log policy.
Kill Switch – Cuts the connection if the VPN tunnel drops.
Double VPN – Chains two servers and rotates IP every 30 seconds.
Split Tunneling – Excludes chosen Windows and Android apps from the tunnel.
Core Capacity – Over 100 server locations, 25 US cities covered.
Important – Commercial use rights and Windows Server support are not included in this edition.
Norton VPN Standard is the VPN-only tier of Norton's privacy range, with apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and TV platforms. It uses the same tunnel, server network and privacy controls as the Plus and Ultimate tiers, but without the bundled antivirus and identity tools.
Same VPN Core – Identical tunnel features to the Plus tier.
City-Level Selection – Choose specific cities, not only whole countries.
Tracking Resistance – Automatic IP rotation plus manual IP refresh.
Streaming Device Support – Apps for Google TV, Fire TV, Apple TV.
Public Wi-Fi Cover – Auto-Connect starts on untrusted wireless networks.
Lean Install – No antivirus engine running in the background.
It encrypts your device traffic and routes it through Norton's server network, replacing your visible IP address with one from the location you select. Norton states it operates a no-log policy and does not track, log or save browsing activity. The Standard tier is the VPN by itself: Norton's own FAQ confirms that standalone VPN plans do not include antivirus. That fits someone who already runs separate security software and wants the tunnel for hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi, where Auto-Connect can start the VPN the moment an untrusted network is joined.
Norton publishes apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV, plus browser extensions for Chrome, Microsoft Edge on Windows and Firefox. Windows support covers x86/x64 machines and Snapdragon X ARM devices, so a newer ARM laptop is not left out. The TV apps matter in practice because region-locked streaming can be handled on the television itself instead of casting from a phone. Feature coverage is not identical everywhere: split tunneling is documented for Windows and Android, while Wi-Fi Security, which flags man-in-the-middle style network threats, is an Android and iOS feature.
No. Norton's feature documentation marks malware protection, Password Manager and Dark Web Monitoring as available to Norton VPN Plus and Ultimate users only, with Privacy Monitor restricted to Ultimate. Standard buyers still get the complete VPN feature set, including Kill Switch, Double VPN, IP Rotation, Manual IP Refresh, P2P optimisation and ad tracker blocking. If you already hold a separate antivirus licence, this split avoids paying for protection twice. If you do not, a Norton 360 plan pairs antivirus with the same VPN engine instead.
All three tiers run the same VPN engine, server network and privacy features; what changes is the added security software and the connection allowance. Standard and Plus each cover five devices, Ultimate covers ten. Plus adds malware and scam protection, Password Manager, Dark Web Monitoring and 10 GB of Cloud Backup, while Ultimate raises that to 50 GB and adds Parental Control and Privacy Monitor. Two limits are worth noting from Norton's documentation: Cloud Backup is Windows-only, and Privacy Monitor is available for use only in the US and Canada.

The app picks a protocol automatically, or you can set one manually from Mimic, WireGuard, OpenVPN and IPsec. Mimic is Norton's own protocol, offered on Windows, macOS and Android, and is built to make the connection look as though no VPN is running, which helps on networks that block obvious VPN traffic. OpenVPN is available on Windows and Android, while IPsec covers macOS and iOS. When a hotel portal or a restrictive office network refuses the connection, switching the protocol by hand is normally the first thing to try before contacting support.
Check licence scope, platform and whether the tunnel alone is enough. Gen's License and Services Agreement limits consumer services to personal or household use and states that Norton VPN is designed for average non-commercial use, so office or client-network deployment falls outside the licence and belongs to the Norton Small Business range instead. There is no Windows Server or Linux client; Norton's supported platform list ends at Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and the TV platforms. If antivirus needs to sit in the same subscription, Standard is the wrong tier and a Norton 360 plan is the closer fit.
Yes. Norton lists P2P Optimization among the core Norton VPN features rather than as a Plus or Ultimate extra, so it is present on the Standard tier. It connects you to a suitable server for peer transfers without manually testing locations first.
No. Norton documents split tunneling for Windows and Android only. On iOS, the usual workaround for a banking or streaming app that rejects the VPN is the Pause VPN control, which suspends the connection and resumes it automatically.
No. Ad Blocker runs inside the Norton VPN browser extension and is limited to desktop Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge for Windows and Mozilla Firefox. Ad Tracker Blocking, which targets advertisers' tracking technologies rather than the adverts themselves, is a separate function handled in the app.
Yes. The Access Local Devices setting keeps traffic to your own network outside the tunnel, so a network printer or NAS stays reachable without disconnecting. This is the setting to check first when a shared drive disappears after the VPN is switched on.
