Recoverit Essentials is the entry edition of Wondershare's data recovery software and is limited to file recovery from drives that a running Windows PC can still see. It covers deleted, formatted, RAW and lost-partition scenarios, but it does not include the bootable toolkit, NAS/Linux recovery or the file repair tools of the higher editions.
Fast Triage – Quick scan surfaces recent deletions in minutes.
Deep Scan – Rebuilds data from formatted or RAW partitions.
Preview First – Confirm files open correctly before recovering them.
Device Coverage – SD cards, USB drives, external and internal disks.
Email Recovery – Restores Outlook PST and OST mailbox files.
Upgrade Path – Standard and Premium add bootable and repair tools.
Essentials scans any drive that Windows can still detect, including internal HDDs and SSDs, external USB disks, USB sticks, SD and CF cards, and camera or drone media. Wondershare lists support for more than 1,000 file formats and for the NTFS, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, HFS+ and APFS file systems, which is why a card formatted in a camera and a partition that suddenly shows as RAW can both be scanned with the same tool. In practice this covers the everyday cases: an emptied Recycle Bin, an accidentally formatted external drive, a lost partition after a resize, or an Outlook PST that vanished from a mapped folder. Physically damaged drives that Windows no longer enumerates are outside the scope of any software recovery, including this one.
Essentials is file recovery only; the higher editions add crash and repair capabilities. Standard adds the bootable toolkit, which builds a WinPE USB stick so you can boot a dead machine and pull files off it, and Wondershare's own support pages name Standard and Premium as the editions that run from that bootable media. Premium goes further with NAS and Linux recovery over a remote connection and with the repair tools for corrupted videos, photos and documents. If your loss scenario is "the file is gone but the PC still boots", Essentials is the right tier; if the machine itself will not start, you need at least Standard.

Not on its own: the WinPE bootable media that starts a dead machine is reserved for the Standard and Premium editions, and Essentials must be run from a working Windows installation. There is a practical workaround that many technicians use anyway: remove the disk from the failed machine, connect it to a healthy PC as a secondary drive via a USB adapter or enclosure, and scan it there with Essentials. That approach only works if the drive is electronically healthy and still shows up in Windows; a disk with clicking heads or an unreadable controller needs a hardware lab, not software. If you expect to deal with non-booting systems regularly, Standard is the edition to buy rather than Essentials.
It fits the person who has one specific loss to undo on a PC that still runs normally, such as a photographer who reformatted an SD card in-camera or an office user who cleared the Recycle Bin before a deadline. The paid Essentials edition removes the 100 MB recovery cap of the free version, which is the practical dividing line, since a single 4K clip or a folder of RAW photos exceeds 100 MB immediately. What it does not solve is the technician workflow: no bootable rescue stick, no NAS scan, no repair of the corrupted files it finds. For an IT department that needs those on a routine basis, the higher editions or the Team plan are the honest answer.
Stop writing to the affected drive first, because recovery only succeeds while the original data has not been overwritten by new data. Wondershare's own support guidance is explicit on one point: never save recovered files back to the source drive, since writing to it can corrupt the very structures the scan is reading. Install Essentials on a different volume than the one you intend to scan, run the quick scan before the deep scan, and use the preview to verify that a file actually opens before you count it as recovered. Also check the licensing side before buying: Recoverit's individual editions are personal licenses, and organisation-wide deployment is handled through the separate Team and Business plan.
Yes. Wondershare confirms that deleted data can be recovered regardless of how much time has passed, as long as the original data has not been overwritten. The age of the deletion matters far less than how much the drive has been used since.
No. Storage devices with hardware failures are outside the scope of Recoverit, and Wondershare recommends a professional data recovery service in those cases. Software scanning requires that the drive still responds and is visible to the operating system.
No. Recoverit does not scan the internal storage of Android or iOS phones and tablets. It can, however, recover from a microSD card taken out of a phone and connected to the PC through a card reader.
The free version contains the same features as Essentials but caps the total recoverable data at 100 MB on Windows. Scanning and preview are free either way, so you can confirm your files are found before committing to a licence.
