Real-time antivirus – Blocks malware, spyware, and ransomware as files run
Ransomware Shield – Blocks programs that try locking your files
Two-way firewall – Stops network intrusions and unsafe public Wi-Fi traffic
Parental control – Filters web content and limits children's screen time
Core Capacity – Protects Windows, macOS, and Android devices
Important – Unlimited VPN, password manager, and identity protection excluded
eset HOME Security Essential is the entry tier of ESET's HOME Security range, built on the engine formerly sold as ESET Internet Security. It bundles antivirus, a firewall, and home-network tools in one license, without the VPN or password manager reserved for higher tiers.
Light footprint – Runs scans without slowing daily work noticeably
Network Inspector – Flags weak router passwords and exposed devices
Webcam protection – Blocks apps secretly accessing camera and microphone
Anti-Theft – Locates and locks a lost laptop remotely
One dashboard – Manages every device through ESET HOME account
Family value – Parental control included without upgrading tiers
It provides real-time antivirus, anti-phishing, a Ransomware Shield, and a two-way firewall for Windows, macOS, and Android devices. As the successor to ESET Internet Security, it also adds Network Inspector, which scans your home router and smart devices for weak passwords and outdated firmware. Its Safe Banking mode opens financial sites in a hardened, isolated browser and encrypts keyboard-to-browser input, which is aimed directly at stopping keyloggers during online banking. Threats blocked, sites filtered, and webcam access attempts are summarized in a monthly Security Report inside the ESET HOME console.
It suits a Windows or Android household that wants malware defense, a firewall, and parental controls under one subscription but does not need a built-in VPN or password vault. Parental control here filters websites by category and sets screen-time limits tied to individual Windows user accounts, so a parent can lock down a child's profile without paying for a separate app. Someone whose main concern is encrypting traffic on public Wi-Fi will not be served by this tier, since the VPN only starts at Premium. For a PC-first home that mainly needs reliable protection against viruses, phishing, and ransomware, this is the lowest tier that still includes a real firewall.
No. Neither a VPN nor the ESET Password Manager is part of the Essential tier. The VPN first appears in ESET HOME Security Premium, the password manager and file/data encryption are also Premium features, and identity protection with dark-web scanning is exclusive to Ultimate. If your goal is to mask your connection on public Wi-Fi or store logins centrally, Essential will not cover it, and the correct step up is Premium rather than a separate purchase.
Essential covers core protection; Premium adds a VPN, password manager, and data encryption; Ultimate adds identity protection with dark-web monitoring plus automatic ransomware remediation. All three tiers share the same Ransomware Shield that blocks encryption attempts, but only Ultimate's Ransomware Remediation automatically backs up and restores affected files. The verified feature split is shown below.

Norton and Kaspersky compared
For a direct security-suite comparison, read our article:
It protects Windows, macOS, and Android, while iOS receives no full ESET antivirus app and only limited privacy features. On Mac, several modules such as the firewall, parental control, webcam protection, and anti-theft rely on macOS's built-in equivalents, so the macOS experience is lighter than on Windows. The richest feature set runs on Windows, where the firewall, Network Inspector, and Safe Banking all operate natively. A mixed Windows-and-Android household therefore gains the most, while an iPhone-only user gets little practical value from this tier.
Check whether you need privacy tools, because Essential deliberately omits the VPN, password manager, and identity monitoring found in higher tiers. Confirm your devices are Windows, macOS, or Android, since iOS gets no full antivirus from ESET. Note also that automatic ransomware rollback (Remediation) is reserved for the Ultimate tier, so Essential blocks ransomware but does not auto-restore encrypted files. If you only need solid malware, firewall, and parental protection on a PC, Essential fits; if you want bundled privacy, plan to step up to Premium.

Yes. The included Ransomware Shield watches application behavior and blocks processes that try to encrypt your files. Automatic backup-and-restore of affected files, called Ransomware Remediation, is not part of this tier and requires ESET HOME Security Ultimate.
It is built around a small system footprint and cloud-assisted scanning that whitelists known-safe files to shorten scan times. A built-in Gamer Mode also suppresses pop-ups and scheduled tasks while an application runs full-screen, so games and presentations are not interrupted.
