Why does Visio 2021 Professional not install on a PC with Office 2016?

Because of the installer, not the year. Microsoft lists Office 2016 as the only release in this range that can be installed with Windows Installer, while everything from Office 2019 onwards uses Click-to-Run, and all of these releases report the same version number, 16.0. Two products that share a version but use different installation technologies cannot sit on the same computer, so a machine running an installer-based Office 2016 takes no Visio of any generation — not even Visio 2016. The Office 2016 installation has to be removed before Visio 2021 Professional can be set up.

In which order should Office and Visio 2021 be installed?

Put the Office suite on the machine first, then install Visio 2021 Professional into the finished installation. Microsoft's own guidance is to install the older Office-family products before the newer ones, and to remove installer-based versions of Office, Visio and Project before deploying a Click-to-Run release. The detail that decides whether the second installation succeeds is the architecture: Microsoft states that all installed products must match in bit version, and its own example is that a 32-bit Visio cannot be installed on a computer running a 64-bit Office. Check the existing suite under File, Account before you run the Visio setup, because a mismatch here is fixed by uninstalling the wrong build, not by repairing it.

Should Visio 2021 Pro Retail be bought instead?

Yes, if the Office on the PC is a retail edition such as Office 2021 Home & Business. Those editions receive their updates on a different channel from the one Visio 2021 Professional uses, and because a device can only be configured for one update channel, the setup stops with a message about the current channel rather than a licensing error. The two listings exist for exactly this reason: the Professional version belongs next to Office LTSC Standard or Professional Plus 2021, the retail version next to a retail Office 2021.

How long is Visio 2021 Professional supported?

Until 13 October 2026. Microsoft has confirmed that Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support on that date and that Visio LTSC 2021 and Project LTSC 2021 end on the same day, after which no security updates, bug fixes or technical support are issued. The 2021 generation carries five years of mainstream support with no extended support phase afterwards, so there is no paid extension to fall back on. The programs keep running, but on a machine that has to pass a supplier security review, the 2024 generation is supported until October 2029 and is the version to compare against before ordering.
