Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 is Windows speech-recognition software that turns spoken words into typed text and runs voice commands. It suits writers, professionals and users with limited mobility who want to cut down on keyboard and mouse work.
Faster Input – Speak text faster than most people can type.
No Training – Start dictating without reading a setup script.
Laptop Mic – Works with built-in microphones, no headset needed.
Less Strain – Cuts repetitive keyboard and mouse use.
Custom Shortcuts – Insert frequent text blocks with spoken commands.
Accessibility Aid – Enables hands-free computing for limited mobility.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 converts your spoken words into typed text and carries out voice commands on a Windows PC. You can dictate into Microsoft Word and Outlook, and use Full Text Control to dictate and edit in Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox, including web mail such as Gmail and Outlook.com through the Dragon Web Extension. Nuance rates recognition at up to 99% accuracy, and version 13 removed the older requirement to read a training script before you begin. For formatted dictation it supports Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013.
It fits people who produce a lot of text or need hands-free computer access, such as writers, bloggers, consultants and users with repetitive strain injuries or limited mobility. Instead of typing long documents, you speak them and Dragon inserts the text at the cursor, which reduces time spent at the keyboard. Version 13 also recognises built-in laptop microphones, so you can dictate without a separate headset. For heavy legal or medical terminology, the specialised Legal or Dragon Medical editions are a better match than the standard product.
The split is mainly about which advanced tools each edition unlocks. Home covers live dictation and basic voice control, but it only accepts voice commands in Word, allows a single audio input, and cannot transcribe pre-recorded audio. Premium adds transcription of recordings from a digital voice recorder, playback for advanced correction, custom text and graphic commands, Bluetooth and multiple microphones, and voice control in Excel and PowerPoint. Professional builds on Premium with scripted commands that use variables and the option to save the source audio alongside the finished document for later correction.

Only the Premium edition and higher can transcribe recorded audio; the Home edition is limited to live microphone dictation. In Premium you record notes on a digital voice recorder, then let Dragon convert that audio file to text back at your PC. Nuance also sells a dedicated Recorder Edition that transcribes recordings only and has no live microphone mode. Keep in mind that Dragon's playback-based Advanced Correction is not available for transcription files, so you edit that text without the original audio.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 is a Windows-only product, so Mac users need a separate Dragon for Mac release with its own feature set. It also does not dictate directly into Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems; Nuance directs healthcare users to Dragon Medical for that workflow. For standard office work it supports Microsoft Office 2010 and 2013 along with the main browsers. If your daily tools are macOS or an EMR platform, this edition is the wrong choice.
Check your Windows version first: release 13 was built for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 and predates Windows 10, so users have reported compatibility issues on newer Windows builds. Then decide which edition matches your workflow, because recorded-audio transcription and custom commands only appear from Premium upward. Confirm the applications you use most are supported, since Full Text Control works best in Word, Outlook and the main browsers. If you rely on macOS or an EMR system, this Windows product will not fit.
No lengthy training is required. Earlier Dragon versions made you read a script aloud before first use, but version 13 lets you create a profile and start dictating straight away. Accuracy still improves over time as Dragon learns your corrections and any words you add to its vocabulary.
No. Nuance retired the NaturallySpeaking naming and moved to later Dragon Home and Dragon Professional releases, and version 13 no longer receives updates. It still works for offline dictation on supported Windows versions, but buyers who need current Windows and Office compatibility should weigh a newer release.
