What are the main benefits of Microsoft Excel 2021?

Microsoft Excel 2021 is the standalone, one-time-purchase version of Microsoft's spreadsheet app, built on the perpetual Office 2021 release for local Windows use. It brings the modern formula engine – XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays and LET – to a classic desktop Excel that runs fully offline without a Microsoft 365 subscription.

One-time purchase – Pay once instead of a monthly subscription.
Works offline – Full spreadsheet features without internet or cloud.
Modern lookups – XLOOKUP and dynamic arrays replace nested legacy formulas.
Faster cleanup – Power Query imports and reshapes messy data.
Stable interface – No forced feature changes during the support window.
File compatible – Opens .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb and .csv workbooks.

What does Microsoft Excel 2021 do?

Microsoft Excel 2021 is the perpetual-license desktop version of Excel for building spreadsheets, models and charts on a local Windows machine. Its biggest practical change over Excel 2019 is the modern formula engine: XLOOKUP and XMATCH replace fragile VLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH setups, and dynamic-array functions (FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE, SORTBY, RANDARRAY) let one formula spill a whole list of results instead of copying it down manually. The LET function, which supports up to 126 name/value pairs, lets you name intermediate calculations so long formulas are easier to read and audit. Built-in Power Query (Get and Transform) handles importing and cleaning messy data before analysis. It runs fully offline and does not require a Microsoft 365 sign-in.

Who is Microsoft Excel 2021 best suited for?

It fits people who need only the spreadsheet app on Windows and specifically do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription. Typical cases are accountants, analysts and back-office staff who build local workbooks and want a fixed feature set that will not change mid-year through automatic updates. Because Excel 2021 receives only security and quality fixes – no new features – through October 13, 2026, it suits environments that value predictability over the latest cloud tools. If a workflow depends on LAMBDA formulas, Copilot, or Python in Excel, the Microsoft 365 version is the better match.

How does Microsoft Excel 2021 compare to Excel 2019 and Excel in Microsoft 365?

Excel 2021 sits between the two: it adds the modern formula tools missing from Excel 2019 but stops short of the continuously updated Microsoft 365 version. Compared with Excel 2019 it gains XLOOKUP, XMATCH, dynamic arrays, LET and real-time co-authoring. Compared with Excel in Microsoft 365 it lacks LAMBDA, Copilot, Python in Excel and any feature released after the 2021 launch, because a perpetual licence never receives new functionality. The table below summarises the verified differences.

Feature	Excel 2019	Excel 2021	Excel in Microsoft 365
XLOOKUP & XMATCH	✕	✓	✓
Dynamic arrays	✕	✓	✓
LET function	✕	✓	✓
LAMBDA function	✕	✕	✓
Real-time co-authoring	✕	✓	✓
Copilot & Python in Excel	✕	✕	✓
Ongoing new features	✕	✕	✓

Does Microsoft Excel 2021 include LAMBDA, Copilot or Python in Excel?

No – none of those are part of Excel 2021. LAMBDA, which lets you build reusable custom functions without VBA, was added to Excel after the 2021 release and exists only in Microsoft 365, so a workbook that relies on it will not calculate correctly here. Copilot and Python in Excel are also Microsoft 365-only and are absent from every perpetual Office 2021 app. Real-time co-authoring is included, but it works only when the workbook is stored on OneDrive or SharePoint and opened as .xlsx, .xlsm or .xlsb, and it is not available in the commercial Excel LTSC 2021 edition. If any of these missing tools are essential, Microsoft 365 is the version to choose.

Which file types and Windows versions does Microsoft Excel 2021 work with?

Excel 2021 opens and saves the modern .xlsx, .xlsm and .xlsb formats plus legacy .xls and .csv files, so existing workbooks and macros generally keep working. It installs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 and will not install on Windows 7 or 8.1, so confirm the PC's Windows version first. Workbooks created in Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 still open, but formulas built on newer functions such as LAMBDA show a #NAME? error because Excel 2021 does not recognise them. VBA macros, .xlam add-ins and Power Query connections built for Excel 2016–2019 usually run without changes.

What should users check before choosing Microsoft Excel 2021?

The most important point is the support deadline: Microsoft ends all security and feature updates for Office 2021, including standalone Excel 2021, on October 13, 2026, with no extended-security-update option. Before buying, confirm you need only Excel and not the wider suite, since Word, PowerPoint and Outlook are sold separately. Check whether any shared workbooks depend on LAMBDA or other Microsoft 365-only functions, because those will not work. Finally, verify the machine runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 so installation proceeds without issues.

Frequently asked questions about Microsoft Excel 2021

Does Microsoft Excel 2021 include Word, PowerPoint or Outlook?

No. Excel 2021 is a standalone single application and installs only Excel; Word, PowerPoint and Outlook are separate products. Buyers who need the full set should choose an Office 2021 suite or Microsoft 365 instead.

Does Microsoft Excel 2021 need an internet connection to work?

No. Excel 2021 installs and runs entirely offline on a local Windows PC, and no Microsoft 365 sign-in is required to open or edit files. The only feature that needs a connection is real-time co-authoring, which requires the workbook to be stored on OneDrive or SharePoint.

Legal Information

Legal Information About Our Products

keys.express and keys.discount are online platforms for product keys. The product keys available in our shops for Windows and other software are inexpensive, secure, legal and come with an activation guarantee.

Below you will find the most important legal information about our products.

Unused and Non-Activated Product Keys

We offer exclusively unused and non-activated product keys. The keys have never been redeemed for activation and are fully available to the purchaser for the first-time activation of the respective product. A key that has already been redeemed could no longer be used for a new activation and is therefore not offered by us.

Trading in these product keys is permissible in the European Union and in Switzerland under current case law, provided that the necessary conditions are met. These conditions are as follows:

The software must originally have been placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the territory of the EU, another contracting state of the EEA, or Switzerland by way of sale.
The license for the software must have been granted in return for the payment of a fee intended to enable the rightholder to obtain remuneration corresponding to the economic value of the copy of the software.
The rightholder must have granted the first acquirer the right to use the software permanently (for an unlimited period).
Any improvements and updates that the subsequently downloaded computer program has compared to the originally downloaded one must be covered by a maintenance agreement concluded between the rightholder and the first acquirer.
The original licensee must have made their own copies unusable.

This trade is legally permissible because the underlying license was already placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the EU/EEA or Switzerland in return for appropriate remuneration. As a result, the so-called principle of exhaustion has taken effect, which permits the resale of individual product keys — in particular those originating from volume license agreements. Microsoft or the respective software provider has already received appropriate remuneration for this.

keys.express and keys.discount ensure that the aforementioned conditions are met and that the lawful use of the software is guaranteed. The requirements arising from European legislation are also observed in Switzerland.

Important note: The acquisition of a product key through the transmission of a combination of numbers and letters in digital form does not, in itself, constitute a license for the lawful use of the program. The license only arises from the respective installation and the associated acceptance of the manufacturer's terms of use.

Legal assessment by Swiss lawyers

Overview of the Most Important Legal Information

We offer unused, non-activated product keys for the activation of the respective computer programs. The key alone is not yet a license.
The license only arises from the respective installation and the resulting acceptance of the terms of use. These terms of use govern the right to use the software between you and the respective manufacturer.
The principle of exhaustion has, as a rule, taken effect — i.e. the license is "used up" — as soon as it was lawfully placed on the market for the first time. The products concerned are software placed on the market for unlimited-time use in the form of an activatable product key with the option to download the program. Microsoft or the respective software provider has received appropriate remuneration for this.
You gain access to particularly attractively priced product keys from volume license agreements, which are to be treated legally in the same way as parts of volume licenses upon first acquisition.
The software itself is always the same original software that is also obtained through official download channels or manufacturer sources. You are therefore not paying for a different or inferior version, but for a valid activation key or a corresponding license.
