What are the main benefits of Microsoft Excel 2019?

Excel 2019 is the perpetual, one-time-purchase version of Microsoft's spreadsheet program, installed locally on a single Windows PC. It is a frozen release that received only security updates during its lifecycle and gained no new features after its 2018 launch.

One-time purchase – Pay once with no recurring fees.
Offline ready – Full spreadsheet work without internet access.
Faster formulas – IFS and SWITCH replace nested IF chains.
Text joining – TEXTJOIN merges columns using chosen delimiters.
Visual mapping – Map charts compare data by region.
Stable release – No forced feature changes during use.

What does Microsoft Excel 2019 do?

Microsoft Excel 2019 is the perpetual, one-time-purchase spreadsheet application for Windows, used for calculations, data analysis, charting, and reporting. Compared with Excel 2016 it adds six functions – CONCAT, TEXTJOIN, IFS, SWITCH, MAXIFS, and MINIFS – plus two chart types, map charts and funnel charts. In everyday work, IFS and SWITCH remove long nested IF formulas, while TEXTJOIN concatenates an entire range with one delimiter instead of manual ampersand operators. It installs locally on a single PC and calculates fully offline, so workbooks open without any cloud connection.

Who is Microsoft Excel 2019 best suited for?

It suits users who need a standalone, locally installed spreadsheet program and do not want a Microsoft 365 subscription or the rest of the Office suite. A typical fit is a single-PC or back-office user who only works in spreadsheets – budgeting, invoicing, list management – and has no need for Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook. Because Excel 2019 received no new features after 2018 and its support has now ended, it makes most sense for an existing, stable workflow rather than anyone who needs current lookup tools like XLOOKUP. Users who depend on dynamic arrays or real-time co-authoring should look at Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365 instead.

How does Excel 2019 compare to Excel 2021 and Microsoft 365?

Excel 2019, Excel 2021, and the Excel in Microsoft 365 share the same core spreadsheet engine, but each newer version adds calculation features the previous one lacks. Excel 2021 introduced XLOOKUP, dynamic array functions (FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE), the LET function, and real-time co-authoring – none of which exist in Excel 2019. Microsoft 365 goes further with continuously updated tools such as LAMBDA that are not part of either perpetual version. The table below lists the verified differences.

Does Excel 2019 include XLOOKUP and dynamic array functions?

No. XLOOKUP and the dynamic array functions (FILTER, SORT, SORTBY, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE, RANDARRAY) arrived in Excel 2021 and are not part of Excel 2019. The newest lookup and logic tools here are IFS, SWITCH, MAXIFS, and MINIFS, so lookups still rely on VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, or INDEX/MATCH. If a workbook built in a newer version uses XLOOKUP, Excel 2019 opens the file but shows a _xlfn.XLOOKUP error in place of the result, because it cannot calculate the function. Buyers who specifically need XLOOKUP or spill formulas should choose Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365.

Does Microsoft Excel 2019 still receive security updates?

No. Microsoft ended support for Office 2019, including Excel 2019, on October 14, 2025, and there is no Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for it. The application still opens and runs normally, but no further security patches, bug fixes, or technical support are issued, so newly found vulnerabilities remain unpatched. For an isolated or offline machine this can be acceptable; for internet-connected or regulated environments it is a real consideration. Users who need ongoing patches should move to Excel 2021 or Microsoft 365.

Can Excel 2019 open workbooks from newer Excel versions?

Yes. Excel 2019 opens and saves the standard .xlsx and .xlsm formats, the legacy .xls format, .csv files, and OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods) files. It shares the 16.0 internal version number with Excel 2016, 2021, and Microsoft 365, so most VBA macros and COM add-ins built for those versions keep working with little or no rework. The limit is functions: cells that use XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, or LET will open but return an _xlfn error, since Excel 2019 cannot evaluate them. For teams exchanging files with Microsoft 365 users, that formula gap is the main compatibility point to check.

What should users check before choosing Excel 2019?

First, confirm the workflow does not depend on XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, or real-time co-authoring, since none are available in this version. Second, weigh the October 14, 2025 end-of-support date, as Excel 2019 no longer receives security updates – a point that matters most on internet-connected PCs. Third, check Windows compatibility, because Excel 2019 is a Windows desktop application and a separate Excel 2019 for Mac exists for macOS users. Finally, confirm you only need Excel itself, as this standalone app does not include Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook.

Frequently asked questions about Microsoft Excel 2019

Does Microsoft Excel 2019 include Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook?

No. Excel 2019 as a standalone product installs only Excel; Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the other Office apps are separate purchases. Anyone who needs the full set should choose an Office 2019 suite or a newer Office edition instead.

Does Excel 2019 need a Microsoft 365 subscription to run?

No. Excel 2019 is a perpetual, one-time-purchase program that launches and runs without any Microsoft 365 subscription or ongoing sign-in. Cloud features such as co-authoring and OneDrive integration are not part of it, but all local spreadsheet work stays available offline.

Is there a separate Excel 2019 version for Mac?

Yes. Alongside the Windows edition, Microsoft released Office 2019 for Mac, which includes a macOS build of Excel 2019. The Windows and Mac versions are distinct products, so buyers should pick the one that matches their operating system.

Legal Information

Legal Information About Our Products

keys.express and keys.discount are online platforms for product keys. The product keys available in our shops for Windows and other software are inexpensive, secure, legal and come with an activation guarantee.

Below you will find the most important legal information about our products.

Unused and Non-Activated Product Keys

We offer exclusively unused and non-activated product keys. The keys have never been redeemed for activation and are fully available to the purchaser for the first-time activation of the respective product. A key that has already been redeemed could no longer be used for a new activation and is therefore not offered by us.

Trading in these product keys is permissible in the European Union and in Switzerland under current case law, provided that the necessary conditions are met. These conditions are as follows:

The software must originally have been placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the territory of the EU, another contracting state of the EEA, or Switzerland by way of sale.
The license for the software must have been granted in return for the payment of a fee intended to enable the rightholder to obtain remuneration corresponding to the economic value of the copy of the software.
The rightholder must have granted the first acquirer the right to use the software permanently (for an unlimited period).
Any improvements and updates that the subsequently downloaded computer program has compared to the originally downloaded one must be covered by a maintenance agreement concluded between the rightholder and the first acquirer.
The original licensee must have made their own copies unusable.

This trade is legally permissible because the underlying license was already placed on the market with the consent of the rightholder within the EU/EEA or Switzerland in return for appropriate remuneration. As a result, the so-called principle of exhaustion has taken effect, which permits the resale of individual product keys — in particular those originating from volume license agreements. Microsoft or the respective software provider has already received appropriate remuneration for this.

keys.express and keys.discount ensure that the aforementioned conditions are met and that the lawful use of the software is guaranteed. The requirements arising from European legislation are also observed in Switzerland.

Important note: The acquisition of a product key through the transmission of a combination of numbers and letters in digital form does not, in itself, constitute a license for the lawful use of the program. The license only arises from the respective installation and the associated acceptance of the manufacturer's terms of use.

Overview of the Most Important Legal Information

We offer unused, non-activated product keys for the activation of the respective computer programs. The key alone is not yet a license.
The license only arises from the respective installation and the resulting acceptance of the terms of use. These terms of use govern the right to use the software between you and the respective manufacturer.
The principle of exhaustion has, as a rule, taken effect — i.e. the license is "used up" — as soon as it was lawfully placed on the market for the first time. The products concerned are software placed on the market for unlimited-time use in the form of an activatable product key with the option to download the program. Microsoft or the respective software provider has received appropriate remuneration for this.
You gain access to particularly attractively priced product keys from volume license agreements, which are to be treated legally in the same way as parts of volume licenses upon first acquisition.
The software itself is always the same original software that is also obtained through official download channels or manufacturer sources. You are therefore not paying for a different or inferior version, but for a valid activation key or a corresponding license.
