Why does Project 2021 Professional not install on a PC with Office 2016?

Because of the installer, not the year. Microsoft lists Office 2016 as the only release in this range that can be installed with Windows Installer, while Office 2019, Office LTSC 2021 and Office LTSC 2024 all use Click-to-Run, and every one of these releases reports the same version number, 16.0. Two products that share a version but use different installation technologies cannot sit on the same computer, so a machine running an installer-based Office 2016 takes no Project of any generation, not even Project 2016. The Office 2016 installation has to be removed before Project 2021 Professional can be set up. An Office 2016 that was installed with Click-to-Run is not blocked by that rule, but it still sits on a different update channel.

In which order should Office and Project 2021 be installed?

Put the Office suite on the machine first, then install Project 2021 Professional into the finished installation. Microsoft's own guidance is to install the older Office-family products before the newer ones, and to remove installer-based versions of Office, Project and Visio before deploying a Click-to-Run release. The detail that decides whether the second installation succeeds is the architecture: Microsoft states that all installed products must match in bit version, and its own example is that a 32-bit Visio cannot be installed on a computer running a 64-bit Office. The same applies to Project, so check the existing suite under File, Account before you run the setup, because a mismatch here is fixed by uninstalling the wrong build rather than by repairing it.

Is Microsoft Project part of any Office 2021 suite?

No, and that is what makes it an add-on rather than an upgrade. This is the row where the 2021 pages differ from the Project 2024 pages: the standard Windows 10 editions are still named here, while the 2024 generation dropped them after Windows 10 reached its own end of support on 14 October 2025. Running Project 2021 on Windows 10 therefore stays within Microsoft's list for the application, on an operating system that no longer receives updates of its own.

How long is Project 2021 Professional supported?

Until 13 October 2026. Microsoft Lifecycle gives Project 2021 a listing start date of 5 October 2021 and that retirement date for both the Professional and the Standard edition, and the same date applies to Office LTSC 2021 and Visio LTSC 2021. The 2021 generation carries five years of Mainstream Support with no Extended Support phase afterwards, so unlike Office 2016 there is no second five-year window of security-only updates. The program keeps running and the licence does not expire, but after that date there are no further security updates, and a business that answers supplier security questionnaires should plan for Project 2024 instead, which Microsoft supports until October 2029.

What is not included with Project 2021 Professional?

There is no macOS version — Microsoft lists Project Professional 2021 among the products available for devices running Windows, and offers only Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2021 on the other platform, so a Mac needs a Windows installation of its own with its own licence before this program can run. The connection to Project Server or Project Online is a Professional-edition capability, alongside the Team Planner view and the resource management tools that Project Standard 2021 does not carry, but the server side is a separate Microsoft product with its own licence and is not part of this purchase.
