What are the main benefits of ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9?

ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 is a macOS application that combines digital asset management with non-destructive RAW development. It works directly on your existing folders, so you can sort, tag and edit photos without first building an import library.

No forced import – Edit photos where they already sit on disk.
Faster people search – Find every photo of a person after naming once.
Reversible editing – Return to any edit step via History or Snapshots.
Batch output – Add watermarks and borders to many images at once.
Clean metadata sharing – Strip EXIF, IPTC and ACDSee data before publishing.
Phone transfer – Mobile Sync moves iOS and Android photos wirelessly.

What does ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 do?

ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 organizes large photo collections and develops RAW and JPEG images non-destructively in a single macOS application. Manage mode handles keywords, categories, ratings, color labels, GPS placement on a map and metadata-based filtering, while Develop mode covers exposure, white balance, Tone Wheels, Color Wheel, Dehaze, Skin Tune, heal and clone. Selective adjustments can be applied with a brush, a linear gradient or a radial gradient, and saved as presets for reuse. Because ACDSee reads your folders directly, an existing archive on an internal drive, external disk or iCloud Drive can be browsed and edited immediately instead of being copied into a separate catalog first.

What is new in version 9 compared with Photo Studio for Mac 8?

Version 9 introduced Face Detection and Facial Recognition, which finds faces in your photos and suggests names once you have assigned them a few times. Develop mode received a right-hand pane that groups Develop Presets (with more than 50 preinstalled presets), a step-by-step edit History and Snapshots of saved adjustment states. Manage mode gained an Info Palette and Histogram, plus filtering inside long keyword and category lists, which matters once a keyword set grows into hundreds of entries. Version 9 also added one-click removal of EXIF, IPTC and ACDSee metadata, and it writes metadata directly into HEIC files instead of creating separate XMP sidecar files.

Does ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 include layered editing like ACDSee Ultimate?

No, the Mac version has no layered editor; that Edit mode with layers, blending modes and composites belongs to ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate for Windows. On the Mac, all editing happens in Develop mode with parametric adjustments and local masks drawn by brush or gradient. For compositing or text overlays, ACDSee for Mac can be configured to hand an image to an external editor of your choice, including a default editor. It can also display Affinity Photo .afphoto files, provided Affinity Photo is installed on the same Mac.

Can ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 run on Windows or on newer macOS versions?

ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 is a macOS-only product; Windows users need the separate Photo Studio Home, Professional or Ultimate line, which is a different product. On the Mac side, it runs natively on Apple Silicon (M-series) as well as on Intel processors and requires a GPU with Metal support. ACD Systems officially lists macOS 11 Big Sur through macOS 14 Sonoma for version 9, with Sonoma support added in the final 9.3 update from September 2023. If you already run a newer macOS release, check this before choosing version 9, because later macOS versions are not on the official list for this release.

How does Mac 9 compare to later versions of ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac?

Mac 9 contains the full face recognition, Develop pane and keyword tools, but none of the AI editing features that ACD Systems added in later releases. Mac 10 added People mode for committing names to faces in bulk and the database-driven Media mode, while Mac 11 introduced AI selection masks for subject, background and sky, AI object masking and import of a Lightroom database. Mac 26 then added AI Keywords, Batch AI Denoise and AI presets. If your work is mainly cataloging, culling and classic slider-based RAW development, version 9 covers that; if you rely on automatic masking or noise reduction for high-ISO shots, a later version is the better fit.

What technical limitations should users know before buying ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9?

Besides the missing layered editor and AI masking, ACD Systems documents several workflow limits in the official version 9 release notes. Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) is not supported, so cameras that only connect via PTP need a card reader or Mobile Sync for transfer, and batch copy, batch move and Move to Trash do not work on images stored on a connected camera. The Find Duplicates tool does not work on iCloud Drive folders. One ACDSee database also cannot be opened by several ACDSee instances at the same time, which rules out a shared team catalog on a network drive.

Which file types and workflows does ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 support?

Version 9 develops RAW files from the cameras on ACD Systems' macOS RAW support list, alongside common formats such as JPEG, TIFF, PNG and HEIC. HEIC files can be saved with EXIF, IPTC and ACDSee metadata embedded directly, which keeps iPhone photos self-contained when they move between apps. Videos, office documents and PDFs open in macOS Quick Look from inside ACDSee, and video files show 4-frame preview thumbnails for faster identification. It is not a video editor, so clips can be cataloged and previewed but not cut or exported.

Who is ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9 best suited for?

It suits Mac users who keep years of photos in ordinary Finder folders and want to tag, rate and develop them without rebuilding everything inside a closed library. Former Picasa or Lightroom users benefit directly because face data from both programs can be imported, so people already named there do not have to be tagged again. Family archivists and event photographers gain the most from face recognition combined with keyword filtering, since finding all images of one person or one occasion takes seconds instead of manual scrolling. Users who need compositing, text layers or AI-based subject selection should look at a later Mac version or a dedicated layer editor instead.

Frequently asked questions about ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 9

Can I place photos on a map and save the location?

Yes, the Map pane shows geotagged images and lets you drag untagged photos onto a location. ACDSee then writes the position into the corresponding IPTC fields so other applications can read it.

Can I compare similar shots side by side?

Yes, up to four images can be viewed and compared at the same time. This is useful when culling a burst series to keep the sharpest frame.

Can I keep separate catalogs for different projects?

Yes, you can create and switch between multiple databases and import databases from previous ACDSee versions. ACD Systems recommends embedding ACDSee metadata into your files before importing an older database.

Does it work with the macOS Live Text feature?

Yes, version 9 is compatible with Live Text, introduced in macOS 12 Monterey. You can select and copy text visible in a photo, such as a sign or a document, directly while viewing it in ACDSee.

Can I open iCloud Drive folders directly?

Yes, iCloud Drive is accessible directly from the Folders pane in Manage mode. Photos stored there can be browsed, tagged and developed like files on a local disk.
